Living room renovation checklist

Mostly a decorating job, unless a chimney, a knock-through or a media wall is involved.

What goes wrong in a living room

  • AvoidOpening up a chimney without a survey and a sweep. An unchecked flue is a safety problem, and a sweep costs an afternoon.
  • AvoidBuilding a media wall before the cable runs are agreed. Retrofitting one HDMI into a finished wall means opening it up again.
  • AvoidRemoving a wall before checking whether it is loadbearing. This is the one item in the house that needs a professional before anything else.
  • AvoidLaying engineered wood straight off the van. It needs to acclimatise in the room first or it will move.
